Brathwaite Rewrites Record Book at States, Erasing Three Marks
Franklin Township, NJ, June 3rd - Junior phenom Ya-sha-rah Brathwaite turned in one of the most historic performances in Elizabeth High School history, qualifying in four events at the 2018 NJSIAA Group 4 Championships at Franklin Township High School.
In the opening event on Friday, the 400m hurdles, Ya-sha-rah cleaned up some early stepping issues during the race to record the #2 time in EHS history. Her performance of 1:03.88 sits only behind the 1:02.15 run by Essex County College/LSU all-american Selena Lewis back in 1995. It was the fastest 400m hurdles race by an EHS athlete in 23 years!
In the closing individual running event on Friday, Ya-sha-rah shocked the field with a stunning run of 56.32 in the 400m. Pre-ranked 15th with a respectable personal best of 58.47, she finished 4th overall, severing a whopping 2.15 seconds from her previous lifetime best. She also shattered the school record of 58.25 turned in by mid-distance great Latitia Salley back in 2010.
Ya-sha-rah picked up on Saturday where she left off on Friday, anchoring the 4x100m relay team to a 7th place overall finish. They missed out on medals, but their performance was outstanding enough to earn them a wildcard entry into next week's NJSIAA Meet of Champions. The mark was also fast enough to surpass the long standing 18 year-old mark of 48.51 set back in 2000. Seniors Destinee Everett-Scott and Narcise Gelin, along with sophomore Chaa-naa-yah Brathwaite comprised the rest of the record-setting team.
Ya-sha-rah capped off her record-breaking performance in the 200m. She zipped across the finish line in a windy 24.92 seconds, surpassing the 19 year-old school record of 25.33 set by Iowa State graduate Laynnea Jones back in 1999.
Overshadowed by Ya-sha-rah's mind-boggling quadruple performance was a 9th place finish by sophomore jumper Nyanza Brooks in the triple jump. Her leap of 35' 4" left her one place short of the finals.

"Quiet Storm"
Soph Nyanza Brooks' Actions Are Speaking Louder Than Her Words
She's not flashy, insolent, or haughty. She is never the major cog in any machine. She's inconspicuous on the bus ride to meets. But when you tally the results and check the stats, soph Nyanza Brooks is more than just the sub-heading to an article.
They had to call Nyanza back to the triple jump pit on Saturday because there was no way that she made it to the finals with a jump of 33' 10". She slowly trudged up the steep embankment leading to the triple jump area, adjusted her pony-tail, and on her last jump of the competition soared 36' 0" into the pit. Nyanza was the first EHS track athlete to surpass 34'. She was the first EHS athlete to eclipse 35'. So it was only fitting that the precocious soph was the first to enter the 36-foot threshold. More importantly, her 5th place finish secured her one of the coveted six positions that advance to the NJSIAA Group 4 State Championships at Franklin High School in Somerset next Saturday.
Nyanza narrowly missed advancing in two other events at the state sectional championships. In the 400m hurdles, she stopped the clock in 1:06.38, moving her into the #6 position in EHS history. Adversely, her 7th place finish left her one place short of advancing into the group meet. She also ran 3rd leg on the 4x400m relay, which also finished an agonizing 7th.
So when Nyanza mounts the runway on Saturday to embark on a historic quest, there will be no yelling. There will be no fancy pre-jump rituals or theatrical posing. She'll just jump. Her actions have proven so.

Brathwaite Is "Four" Real!
Junior Speedster Leads Elizabeth Girls Into Groups With A Four Medal Performance
Basking Ridge, NJ, May 25th -26th - Earning ONE medal at our sectional state meet in the largest group/section requires a bit of skill. Winning TWO medals points to above average consistency in a discipline. Acquiring THREE medals at a state meet says you're one heck of an athlete. Gathering FOUR medals at a state meet requires mental and physical fortitude that stresses the limits of your most revered athletes. Sensational junior Ya-sha-rah Brathwaite accomplished that rare feat at the 2018 NJSIAA Section 2 Group 4 State Championships at Ridge High School.
Ya-sha-rah began her charge in the 400m hurdles. Pre-ranked 11th in the event, Ya-sha-rah governed the barriers to a heat-winning time of 1:05.32 seconds. She obliterated her old personal best by 1.67 seconds and leaped to #5 on the all-time EHS charts. It was also proficient enough to garner a 4th place bronze medal and a trip to the overall group championships next Friday.
Next up on the first day of competition was the 400m. Running from the penultimate section, Ya-sha-rah held on to win in 58.47 seconds. That time logged her in at 5th place overall and advanced her to the group championships in yet another event. It also strengthened her position as the #2 400m runner in school history, peaking over the shoulder of Latitia Salley's 58.25 record from 2010.
On Saturday, Ya-sha-rah picked up where she left off the day before. In the 4x100m relay, Ya-sha-rah zipped her team across the line in 48.78 seconds. Not only did Ya-sha-rah help 3 of her teammates (Chaa-naa-yah Brathwaite, Narcise Gelin, Destinee Everett-Scott) earn 3rd place bronze medals, they also posted the #3 mark in EHS history. The 4x100m relay team has posted two sub-49 second marks this past week, also posting a 48.95 at Monday's East Coast Relays.
Capping off her medal haul in the 200m, Ya-sha-rah blazed a lane 1 25.57 second race, earning yet another bronze medal (4th place). Her performance catapulted her up to #2 on the all-time charts, missing the school record by .24 seconds (25.33).

Brooks Bounds Into History
Precocious Sophomore Shatters Triple Jump School Record; Also Records #6 All-Time 400 Hurdles Mark
Hub Stine Field, Plainfield, May 17th - The Lady Minutemen have been snake-bitten by nagging injuries this season, consequently relegating every trip to the track a "cross your fingers and hope for the best" moment. Injuries aside, the Lady Minutemen eschewed all that ailed them and turned in a slew of historical performances at the 2018 Union County Championships.
Sophomore Nyanza Brooks stole the show, clobbering the 6 year-old record in the triple jump. After adjusting her take off point, Nyanza immediately dispelled the 33' 10.5" record with a leap of 34' 9". She saved her best jump for last, sailing 35' 0.5" inch on her final trip into the pit. That jump earned her the 3rd place bronze medal.
The 400m hurdles crew, which has been stalwart all season long, parlayed their efforts into all-time great performances. Running in the penultimate section, Nyanza Brooks and junior superstar Ya-sha-rah Brathwaite dueled tooth and nail to the finish line, recording two of the fastest times in school history. Nyanza eyelashed Ya-sha-rah by two-hundredths of a second, stopping the clock at 1:06.95. That race logged Nyanza in at #6 on the EHS all-time annals. Ya-sha-rah's 1:06.97 runner-up performance moves her into the #7 all-time slot. Not to be outdone, gritty senior Ruth Louis turned in a second sub-1:10 performance, crossing the line in 1:08.96 seconds. The hurdle group finished 4th, 5th, and 9th in the meet results, squeezing all three performances into the top 10 places.
In the 400m, sophomore Chaa-naa-nah Brathwaite joined an elite group of 7 EHS athletes who have ever run under 1:00 in the 400m. Battling tender shins, Chaa-naa-yah fought to a nifty 59.89 performance, etching her name into the 6th slot on the all-time EHS history pages.
Speaking of the all-time list, the older Brathwaite (Ya-sha-rah) ripped halfway around the track to tie 2008 graduate Marline Edmond for #3 all-time in the 200m (25.73).
Other noteworthy Union County Championship performances:
* Senior Narcise Gelin made the long jump final and finished 6th with a leap of 16' 11.75". She also turned in a sub-13 100m performance (12.89, 10th place).
* Sophomore Kiara Franco chipped 10 seconds off of her personal best in the 1600m, running 6:14.90.
* Sophomore Breyonna Lowery continues to open eyes in the 800m, posting another personal best of 2:34.26.
* Senior Narcelle Gelin added nearly a foot to her long jump personal best, soaring 15' 9.5" to finish 10th in the long jump.

Lady Minutemen Display Speed At Union County Relays
January 14th, Jersey City - After a one week delay due to inclement weather, the Lady Minutemen were able to log in some notable performances at the 2018 Union County Relays in the venerable Jersey City Armory.
In the 4x200m relay, the veteran squad of Ya-sha-rah Brathwaite, Destinee Everett-Scott, Ruth Louis, and Chaa-nah-yah Brathwaite ended 9 seasons of futility by racing under the 1:50 barrier at the J.C. facility. Not only did the subvert the barrier (1:49.09), they also finished in their highest position in the past 10 meets (4th). With scoring occurring in the first 6 positions, the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference should analyze the idea of awarding medals to ALL scoring positions...
In the Sprint Medley Relay, the team of Ya-sha-rah Brathwaite, Nyanza Brooks, Ruth Louis, and Destinee Everett-Scott finished one spot out of scoring position in 4:38.75, missing 6th by .03 seconds.
In the meet-ending 4x400m, the determined squad meted out a spectacular performance, snagging the bronze, 3rd place medals. Their mark of 4:12.82 was the 4th fastest time EVER by an EHS girls' 4x400m team! It was also the fastest performance at this meet/facility for the Lady Minutemen.

Lady Minutemen Break 4:10 In "Practice Run"
December 26th, Manhattan - In what was planned as an end-of-the-meet "practice run", or what we deem as "putting in the work", the Lady Minutemen shocked with a sub-4:10 4x400m performance at the Jim Mitchell Invitational at the NYC Armory.
The veteran squad of Yah-sha-rah Brathwaite, Ruth Louis, Chaa-nah-yah Brathwaite, and Destinee Everett-Scott stopped the clock in a stunning 4:09.40. That performance obliterated the 6 year-old school record set back in 2012.
Junior Yah-sha-rah Brathwaite also found time to tie her own school record in the 300m with an identical 42.38 she ran a year ago.

Leaping Into Form At The Jim Mitchell Invitational
Gelin Flirts With 16 foot Long Jump; Brathwaite Hurdles Sub-10
December 22nd, Manhattan - Track & field coaches all over the state are feeling the effects that the Christmas holiday break inflicts on their programs. Athletes travel afar to see family. They are preoccupied with last-minute gift shopping. Many are finishing mid-term examinations. The last thing that many student-athletes are focused on is running, jumping, and throwing.
Nonetheless, the "relieved" Lady Minutemen were able to tune in and submit some impressive performances before they scampered into the Christmas holiday.
Senior Narcise Gelin, who took last winter off, is back with us this season with a vengeance. She leapt 15' 7 1/2" in the long jump in only her 2nd competition of the season. Look for Narcise to surpass 16 feet early in the season.
Junior Yah-sha-rah Brathwaite has parlayed her hurdle's practices into her first sub-10 second performance of her young career. Her time of 9.63 seconds in the #7 FAT performance in school history. She also posted the 3rd sub-43 second 300m performance in school history (42.78).
The 4x200m relay squad made a 2.78 second improvement from it's last foray, racing 4 laps of the oval in 1:48.20 seconds. The team of Yah-sha-rah Brathwaite, Narcise Gelin, Ruth Louis, and Destinee Everett-Scott notched yet another top-10 EHS all-time performance (#6).

All-time EHS great Yah-sha-rah Brathwaite, a junior, posted respectable marks in her seasonal debut. In the 300m she logged her 2nd sub-43 second run of her career (42.66) as well as a 7.69 55m clocking.
Gabrielle Niziolek is nonchalantly establishing herself as an EHS all-timer in the shot put, just missing the Top-10 list by 7 inches with a respectable 28' 4" launch.
